What is a Ceramic Coating?
At one point in time, a paste wax was the top shelf choice to protect and enhance your vehicles shine while also protecting it from external elements like rain, bird poo, dirt, etc.
Fast forward 25 years, a bunch of scientists worked their magic in a lab, and we now have a far more durable and superior form of protection: ceramic coatings.
Unlike Mr. Miyagi, this is not a “wax-on-wax-off” application. The ceramic coating is a semi-permanent liquid layer that bonds to the vehicle’s surface. It is commonly mentioned as a “sacrificial” layer of protection as it’ll absorb the weather elements like rain, dirt and snow to better protect the paint.
Another way of putting it is like the wax is like a tent protecting you in the forest. The ceramic coating is like a brick house in the forest. Both offer the protection from rain and dust but one is nothing like the other.
The Benefits of a Ceramic Coating
- Produces a durable layer of protection that last 2 to 3 years
- You only need to apply it once (not every 3 months like other forms of Protection)
- Creates a deep level of gloss that’s incomparable to other forms of protection like wax or sealant
- Provides unmatched hydrophobic properties that keeps your car cleaner and makes it easier to wash.
- It can be installed on paint, glass, wheels or trim surfaces.
Ceramic Coating Myths
Yes, coatings are long-lasting and durable, but that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want with your vehicle and think the coating will protect it. It has it’s limitations and its important to understand what a coating can handle.
(The coating will not make your paint scratch-proof) so if you drag your dirty wash mitt over your paint work you will scratch your paint or if you drag your leg or hand across the paint you’ll scratch it.
(The coating will not protect your paint against rock chips) The only real option to protect your paint from rock chips is “PPF Paint Protection film”
(The coating requires maintenance to prolong the durability) Just like many other things in life, if you don’t take care of the coating it will degrade overtime and not last the intended lifespan.
(The coating is not fire proof or high pressure proof, E.g., water pressure 2000 psi onwards) This is common sense don’t test your vehicle with a powerful pressure washer or using anything fire or heat wise.
